Locals tell us that once slavery had been abolished, soldiers were sent into the mountains to warn the slaves that they were now free men. Seeing the soldiers approaching dangerously and refusing to be arrested, the families taking refuge on the immense rock decided to throw themselves into the void, preferring to die free than live as prisoners of the whites.
